| New Online Humor Newspaper Launched |
5/23/2004 Santa Barbara, CA -- It's no April Fools Joke. Or maybe it is. The Wacky Times, a new online humor newspaper, on the Internet—-at wackytimes.com. There are plenty of clues that this is one newspaper you don't want to take too seriously. The paper's motto, proudly displayed beneath the masthead, reads: "Following in the grand tradition of journalism by not letting the truth get in the way of the news." A box on the front page announces: "Retractions-—a regular feature." The premiere issue's front page headline reads "Rush Limbaugh Abducted By Aliens." Senator Kennedy's response to the talk show host's disappearance is one of subdued concern: "I don't think there's anyone in either party that doesn't wish Mr. Limbaugh success at his new, remote location." Unlike some of its online comedy magazine counterparts, The Wacky Times aims for a general audience. Its humor is clean, tasteful and suitable for all ages. One clue that something is amiss is the paper's editorial staff, which is made up entirely of a family of cartoons-—the Loop Family. And they certainly are loopy. Mickey Loop is the paper's hapless cartoon editor. His sister, Tabby Loop, hosts a personal advice column called "Dear Tabby." The editor's uncle, Stanford Harvard Loop, M.D., is the newspaper's medical advice columnist who doesn't seem to know the difference between a Fibula and a Football. This loopy band of mischief-makers has something to say about everything—including entertainment reviews ("Jim Carrey in the latest 007 flick: Jimmy Bond, PinkEye"), health news ("All Food Is Bad For Your Health") and even sports ("The NFL Plays The NBA"). Many of the stories include remarkable photos you'll find nowhere else. Future issues of the Wacky Times will include restaurant reviews, investment advice, cooking tips as well as dubious classified ads and letters to the editor.
