A Close Encounter of the Sexual Kind
Tina Turner's workshops encourages others to re-awaken their “erotic-selves”.

Tina Turner is on a mission. Four years ago she was a tired career woman and mother of two children: cooking, cleaning, working long hours, and driving the kids. The last thing she felt was erotic or sensual. Like many women, she had gotten lost in a “dead zone” when it came to her sexuality: too tired to do it and too tired to care. Now, she helps people move out of that zone, re-discover their sexuality and embrace life with passion through every season of their life.

“Our sexuality is life energy. But for many women it is squelched by stress, pressure and fear. They are taught that sexual energy is limited to the bedroom only - that it can be turned off and on like a light switch. Without attention and support it gets harder and harder to turn the light on and keep it on,” says Turner. Turning this energy back on in everyday life doesn't just magically happen. Turner leads “Reclaiming Circles” where women gather as a group to share and explore, in a safe environment, their experiences, stresses and hopes. They learn about their bodies, their desires, how to deal with societal pressures to look a certain way, or act in a specific way for their partner. Urged to make sex and themselves a priority, women come away with a boost of energy and self-confidence.

Many of her hundreds of workshop participants, ranging from 22 years to 76 years, often feel scared at first. Over time, however, their self-image improves which carries over to improved relationships with other people. They feel more vibrant and experience better health, an opinion supported by medical leaders such as Christiane Northrup, M.D.

Turner began her “reclaiming journey” when a friend encouraged her to read erotic literature. Many of the stories inspired her to begin writing her fantasies in a journal as a way to reconnect. "I started to feel the passion within me and began to feel more alive than I had in a long time," she said. “The greatest gold I have to pass on is how women can give their sexuality attention and nurturing throughout our lives. I feel very strongly that women of all ages need to share our intimate stories of challenges and wisdom in order to heal and affirm this part of all of us,” Turner states.

Tina Turner's story of personal sexual awakening will be featured on the new women's television show, “Tell It Like It Is”, airing fall 2003 on the W Network.
