6/23/2004 Remote Romantics Online Dating More than a third of people (34%) with web access would use the web to find a romantic restaurant for Valentine's Day, according to the latest wave of internet research commissioned by The Royal bank of Scotland. Those aged 25-34 (46%) or 16-24 (45%) are most likely to look for a restaurant online and those aged over 55 are least likely (14%). Nearly as many 32% would buy a Valentine's gift or flowers online. Again, it's the 25 to 34 years olds who are most likely to do this 42 per cent buy flowers or other gifts online. Around a quarter 27% of those surveyed send electronic Valentine's cards and men and women are broadly similar in this respect. But when it comes to dating someone met through a online dating site, more than double the number of men (8%) than women (3%) have done or would consider doing this. Browsing online dating sites is most popular among divorced, widowed or separated folk; 18% compared with 10% of singletons browse dating sites. Surprisingly though 3% of married people admit to doing the same and 2% would date someone met over the net. People from Yorkshire and north east England are most likely to date or find a partner through a internet online dating site 14% say they have or would do this, compared to 9% of Londoners and 5% of those from the south east and East Anglia. But outside of England folk are shyer just 1% of Scots and 2% of Welsh respondents admit to using online dating web sites though 6% and 5% respectively will browse them. There are some clear regional differences in other areas too. Nearly half 48% of Londoners would use the web to find that perfect romantic restaurant but less than a fifth 21% of Welsh people would. When it comes to buying gifts or flowers online the Scots top the league, 43% use the internet, whereas only a quarter of folk in the south east, East Anglia and the north west would do the same. Londoners (40%) and people from Scotland (34%) and the Midlands (32%) are most likely to send Valentine's greetings electronically but the Welsh clearly prefer the old-fashioned and arguably more romantic way: just 14% send their cards for online dating. |
