BREAST IMPLANTS FOR TEENS? DON¡¦T CALL ASSOCIATED PLASTIC SURGEONS

KANSAS CITY, MO. --- If you are a teen and considering getting breast implants, don¡¦t bother to ask any of the four plastic surgeons at Associated Plastic Surgeons. The answer is a resounding ¡§no!¡¨

¡§We are totally opposed to breast implants on any woman younger than her early twenties,¡¨ says Dr. Mark McClung of Associated Plastic Surgeons. ¡§Until a few years ago this was not really an issue, but today we¡¦ve heard of some girls as young as 14 having the surgery. Somebody need to speak out on this issue.¡¨

Dr. McClung notes that teens who occasionally approach Associated Plastic Surgeons to inquire about breast implants are often counseled and told to come back when their growth stage is over, generally in their early to mid-twenties. According to McClung, young girls are developing rapidly in their teen years and implants would serve no useful purpose.

¡§We have heard of teens getting implants for ¡¥self-esteem¡¨ reasons,¡¨ he says. ¡§That is a very sad reason for such a surgery.¡¨

The only breast surgery Associated Plastic Surgeons will perform on teens involves breast reductions, which are done for health¡Xnot cosmetic¡Xreasons. ¡§Some of the happiest patients we have are teens who have had breast reductions,¡¨ McClung notes. ¡§They often have experienced stress on their spine and participation in normal activities is very difficult. It enables them to enjoy their teen years.¡¨

Associated Plastic Surgeons has been in business more than 20 years with two Kansas City locations (6420 Prospect & 4400 Broadway) and an office at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park (5701 West 119th St.).
