Web sites for dating in Alaska exist, but….

I'm a single, 38 year-old professional female trying to meet an Alaska male
with whom I can share my life. But I can't seem to find a singles Web site
there. Can you help me out?

Dear Seriously:

Ah, the mystique of the Alaska male. He's strong, he's virile, he's the
closest thing a woman can get to primitive man. He can catch fish with his
bare hands, skin a moose in one stroke and build a fire by rubbing spruce
branches together. He's strong and tall, grizzled and tough and, like the
Eveready battery, just keeps going and going and going.

OK, I'm joking. Because while the men who I know up here might be special,
they're (dare I say it?)pretty much the same as men anywhere. Yeah, most
like to ski and fish, hunt and kayak, camp and hike and snowboard. Yeah,
being outdoors is high on their list of priorities. And yeah, their garages
are stacked high with toys and camping gear. But face it, when it comes to
the nitty gritty stuff that makes up a relationship, we all basically want
the same thing. We want to be appreciated and desired, loved and respected.
We want to be with someone willing to look past our flaws to the beauty of
who we really are inside. Location doesn't make the person; it only defines
his perimeters.

I'm mentioning this because it sounds as if you're not from up here. And
don't get me wrong --I have nothing against Internet dating services. It
just seems that for someone who doesn't live up here it's, well, cheating.
If you want to live the Alaska dream, you need to put your best foot
forward and start doing it. It's sad and unrealistic to expect a man to
make it happen for you. This isn't the olden days, sweetie. If you want
something, you've got to move up here, get a job and make yourself a life
before worrying about finding the perfect man.

That said, I've listed a few Web sites recommended by friends who've
experienced positive results. I've browsed through each one and listed them
in the order of interest and ease.

www.alaskamen.com: This was my site of choice simply because the men
obviously put more energy into their photographs. The result was a group of
yummy-looking guys almost jumping out of my screen. The site is based on
the AlaskaMen magazine. It was incredibly easy to use: One click got me to
the bios, which were longer than those on any other site. A very good
choice.

www. americansingles.com: This was the most clear and easiest site to
maneuver of any of the remaining. The photographs were clear, the
descriptions helpful and, best of all, there were more than 100 men waiting
to meet me.

www.match.com: This site also was easy to use, though it took longer to get
to the good stuff. When I finally got to the men, I was able to move
through quite rapidly. Good photos, long enough descriptions.

www.people2people.com: This was an OK site, a lot of contacts, but for some
reason it just didn't excite much interest.
